There are a few David Muirs out there. I am not the actor who once appeared on the Bob Newhart show. I am not the correspondent for ABC News in New York. I am not a lecturer on Educational Computing at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow. I am not a guy in the materials research group in Condensed Matter Physics at the University of Saskatchewan. I am not a sales rep for Coldwell-Banker in Kitchener, Ontario. I am not a chartered accountant at Collins Barrow in Ottawa, Ontario.
I am a software development manager for an IBM product called WebSphere Development Studio Client. I’ve been involved in bulletin board, Internet, and web technologies since 1988. I remember in the early days when a search for David Muir only produced hundreds of hits for a guy named David Muir Sharnoff. Tonight I was amazed to find that he is now actually below me on the Google hit list.
Steve Martin appeared in a movie called The Jerk (1979). There’s a famous scene in there where he looks himself up in the phone book and finds his name. He concludes happily that he is a somebody! But, after Googling my own name… I actually feel more like a jerk.
